We sadly have to report the recent death of James Hayes, scholar, collector and longtime TAASA member. James joined TAASA in its early years and served on the TAASA Committee in the 1990s when he was active in organising events and talk programs, participated in symposia and contributed to the TAASA Review.

In later years, he was a regular attendant at TAASA events, generously donated items from his collection to the TAASA yearly bazaar and was a source of encouragement to myself as TR editor. In the 20th anniversary issue of the TAASA Review (December 2011), James wrote that his ‘love affair’ with Asia began while he served in Korea during his (British) National Service in the 50’s and was able to take local leave visiting ‘derelict palaces in the capital and old monasteries in the hills behind the coast’.

He soon embraced a wider love for China, Japan and Vietnam...
