James Bennett T he generous gifts of Michael Abbott AO, KC to Australian cultural institutions are legendary in Asian art circles around this country and overseas.
Consequently, it is fitting that 50 years of his beneficence is commemorated in the festschrift publication Interwoven journeys: The Michael Abbott collections of Asian art edited by James Bennett and Russell Kelty and published by the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA). The lavishly illustrated volume, featuring contributions from 31 scholars, is monumental in dimensions being over 460 pages in length, and it is magnificent testimony to the superb talents of AGSA’s catalogue designer, Antonietta Itropico.
Yet it is astonishing to contemplate that the works of art appearing in the publication represent just a very small portion of his gifts over five decades...
