6 March 2023 The Origins of the Temple of the Golden Pavilion: The Kitayama Temple-Palace Complex in 14th-century Kyoto Matthew Stavros This lecture focused on the well-known 14th century Japanese icon, the Golden Pavillion.
In keeping with the theme, Matthew Stavros spoke less on the building itself than what it represents as a spectacular remnant of a most remarkable and much greater sacred site: a complete capital city established just outside the boundaries of the Imperial capital of Kyoto, similarly laid out in imperial style.
