Christina Sumner T he decorative use of precious metals in Asian textiles and dress is a favoured and widespread practice of considerable longevity.

From Turkey and Iran in the west, through Central, South and Southeast Asia to China, Japan and Korea in the east, dressing for best and to impress regularly called for the opulent glitter of gold and silver.

Given the regard we have for these precious metals, it is no surprise that their exploitation in the ornamentation of fabric served as the go-to indicator of wealth, status and power...
