Matt Cox I n 2021 the Art Gallery was the beneficiary of three very generous and important gifts from Dr Jim Masselos, Gael Newton and Robert Dein.
The Art Gallery, which began collecting Asian art with acquisitions of Japanese ceramics from the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879, now hosts a rich collection of more than 4200 Asian artworks.
These three donations of more than 150 paintings and photographs make a quintessential contribution to documenting a complex period of colonial occupation and global entanglements from the late 18th to the early 20th century: a period underwritten by exploitation and violence but also bearing witness to great exchange, innovation and the emergence of Asian modern art...
