Melanie Eastburn T he expansion of the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) – the Sydney Modern Project – magnifies the Art Gallery’s emphasis on Asian art, particularly contemporary Asian art.
Complementing the newly refurbished Asian galleries in the original building, the new building, designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of Tokyo architectural firm SANAA, opens with a strong presence of works from the Asian collections, as well as new commissions from Yayoi Kusama (Japan b.1929) and Lee Mingwei (Taiwan-USA b.1964).
