Min-Jung Kim S ince 2009, the Powerhouse Museum has been receiving outstanding donations of contemporary Japanese fashion from Dr Gene Sherman AM, Founder and Executive & Artistic Director of the Sherman Centre for Culture & Ideas (SCCI).
These donations consist of extraordinary garments and fashion accessories designed by leading contemporary Japanese designers Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons; they now number over 100 items. My curatorial encounter with Gene Sherman’s exceptional collection was in 2008, when she invited the Museum to inspect her fashion wardrobe at her Paddington home.
Each piece was carefully catalogued and stored in museum standard archival boxes in the attic of her home...
