I knew the name Huang Yongyu long before I met him.

It was when the Gang of Four were in power and their decrees about revolutionary purity in the arts were absolute.

In 1974 they organised a `Black Art Exhibition’ at the Central Art Gallery in Beijing to name and shame artists whose work was judged to be subversive or even counter-revolutionary...
