As an individual, he inspired and amused; as Director of the Gallery for 33 years he pursued his vision of raising the Gallery into the upper echelon of international art museums, to be respected and visited for its ever-expanding collections, publications, exhibitions and educational programs.

He channelled his Directorial authority and indefatigable energy into Gallery extensions, the establishment of a Foundation for acquisitions, and a vibrant and wide-ranging program of exhibitions.
