Leong Chan A s an ex-British colony, Hong Kong culture has been described variously as where “East meets West”.

Hong Kong artists, however, also imagine a local identity, responding to a psychological distancing from the broader confines of British colonisation and Chinese heritage while not denying either.

This consciousness of a local identity intensified towards the approach of the 1997 handover of sovereignty leading to the incorporation of Hong Kong into a larger entity. The Hong Kong Museum of Art mounted the exhibition, Chinglish, during 23 March – 6 June 2007, ten years after the return of the former British colony to China...
