Antonia Finnane I n May 2015, the Metropolitan Museum of Art launched a spectacular and, as it proved, extremely popular exhibition called China through the Looking Glass, an exposition and celebration of Chinese aesthetics in highend fashion designs.

It was in a way a salute to Orientalism in haute couture.

Apart from some items from the Met’s historical costume collection, there was little on show from contemporary Chinese designers, and just one garment on display reminded viewers of the Mao years...
