Siobhan Campbell C arole’s first encounter with Bali in the early 1970s sparked an enchantment that endured for the rest of her life.
Initially involved in the design and building of luxury hotels in Bali alongside her architect husband Peter Muller, Carole’s sharp and interrogative mind was quickly drawn to more erudite investigations of Balinese society and cultural life.
Joining a loose circle of scholars and other expatriates undertaking studies of Bali, Carole sought a real engagement with the rather neglected subject of the Bali Aga, the Old or Original Balinese, who trace their origins to the pre-Majapahit period and inhabit the mountain highland areas of the interior, northeast coast and southeast of the island...
