Clark F or many years, I have been searching museums and art collections around the world for surviving examples of Chinese Qing dynasty (1636 1911 CE) ceramic vessels used by the Manchu emperors at 12 altars and temples around Beijing for state ritual sacrifices.
While about 200 such vessels have been found, one branch of this exclusive family, the small bowl-like wine cups known in Chinese as zhan originally produced by the hundreds remain extremely elusive: not a single example has been found! Experience suggests that there are in fact many such cups hidden away in boxes on museum storage shelves both in China and elsewhere, but their special function and characteristics are not obvious and most regrettably, they remain unrecognised...
