Olivia Meehan’s talk will focus on three luxury picture books that the great Utamaro Kitagawa (1753-1806) illustrated for the renowned publisher Tsutaya Jzabur: Picture Book of Crawling Creatures, Gifts of the Ebb Tide, and Myriad Birds.
These anthologies were decorated by Utamaro using lavish and elaborate printmaking techniques, and include poems by witty kyka poets.
