Jackie Menzies T he colourful image illustrated is a portrait of the Rajasthani hero-god Pabuji.

It is one section of an exceptionally wide and beguiling painting that comprises numerous lively vignettes relating to the life and miracles of Pabuji.

The painting belongs to a distinctive type of popular narrative painting called variously phad or par, or in English ‘story cloth’...
