Due to the stone figures’ striking and enigmatic prominence in the landscape, early Russian Central Asian scholars were quick to study them and in the past 50-60 years a number of regional studies of the stone sculptures have yielded important results.
Despite documenting several hundred stone sculptures, scholars consistently note that there are still many more to be studied.
