This pair of vases came from an Australian collection, which, together with their date, suggests they may have come from one of the Melbourne International Exhibitions held 1880 and 1888.

Certainly their scale, richness and complexity places them in a class beyond the standard export examples of the Meiji period.

They are the best examples of Meiji period metalwork in any Australian public collection ­ in fact, they are probably major examples of 19th century metalwork internationally. ...
