Tsutomu Mizusawa T he large-scale exhibition featuring Yoshitomo Nara+graf entitled A to Z, which took place in Aomori from July to October 2006, is a very interesting case when considering the situation of contemporary Japanese art.

It took place in Hirosaki, Nara’s hometown, at the Yoshii Brick Brewhouse, a long-established sake brewery that was converted as the exhibition site.

The exhibition featured a leading artist in contemporary Japanese art and, at the same time, a project in which volunteers from the general public worked together with the artist on its planning and management...
