Philip Courtenay I n May 2006, the historic central Javanese Hindu temple complex of Prambanan was brought to world attention by the 6.3 magnitude earthquake which struck the district around the city of Yogyakarta on the 27th of the month.

Located on the outskirts of Yogyakarta, Prambanan suffered substantial damage due to its closeness to the main earthquake area whose hypocentre was about 37 km south of the city and 33 km below the Indian Ocean seabed.

Approximately 40 km northwest of Yogyakarta, Borobudur, an equally ancient Buddhist monument, survived completely intact. The Large Temple at Prambanan, drawing by H...
