Trade Winds to Palembang
Tracing trade wares through SE Asian entrepots
Most people associate the China Trade with the East India Companies based in England and Western Europe. Yet most of the trade wares with which we are familiar travelled through the entrepots of Srivijaya based around Palembang in Sumatra, very often in Malay and Indonesian ships.
This meeting is about that trade and the things that were traded – ceramics, textiles, metal wares and spices. Our guest experts are Melanie Eastburn, Senior Curator, Asian Art at the Art Gallery of NSW and Linda McLaren, MA candidate, University of Sydney (9th-14th century SE Asian ceramics found on shipwrecks and terrestrial sites). They join John Yu in a panel discussion on trade routes, shipwreck cargoes and export ceramics of the time.
TAASA members and guests are invited to bring relevant pieces they would like to share and discuss.
