The rising clouds of spring and the whitened mountains of winter: Sesson, Zen and painting the natural world
Russell Kelty, Associate Curator of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia and a specialist in Japanese art.
In this talk Russell Kelty will focus on the brush and ink master Sesson Shukej (c.1492 – 1589). Sesson lived during the turbulent Muromachi period (1392- 1573) which was defined by the rise of the military classes and the profound impact of Zen Buddhism on the art and culture of Japan. The talk will include images of Sesson’s dynamic, witty paintings of Daoist immortals, Zen Buddhist patriarchs and his poetically elegant depictions of flora and fauna.
