The Textile Study Group Committee invites you to our final meeting of the year to listen to our guest speaker, Dr Hwei- F’en Cheah. Silk embroidery in Sumatra has typically been associated with court traditions and Chinese influences. Through examples from the Padang Highlands, Bengkulu and Palembang, Hwei- F’en will consider another side of the story that tells of popular taste, cottage industries and creative responses at the turn of the twentieth century. Hwei- F’en will also present a short video of terawang (drawn thread) embroidery in the Padang Highlands. She has requested that any members who have relevant pieces, to bring them along.
Art historian, Hwei-F’en Cheah completed her doctorate on Nyonya beadwork which was later published as: Phoenix Rising: Narratives in Nyonya Beadwork from the Straits Settlements. She has been a lecturer in Asian art and textile history at the Australian National University and is particularly fascinated by needlework and its infinity of tiny details. She has also served on the Committee of Management of TAASA.

WALKING DIRECTIONS
From Circular Quay
Walk to George Street in The Rocks. Turn left into Argyle Street and walk under the famous Argyle Cut to climb the stairs opposite the Garrison Church. Turn left at the top of the stairs and follow Watson Road past the Sydney Observatory to the National Trust Centre.
From Wynyard and the city
At No. 1 York Street walk through the expressway underpass. Follow the tunnel, keeping to the right, until you come up on Kent Street. Walk along Kent Street to the Agar Steps, or follow the approach to the Bridge, which will take you past the National Trust Centre on your left.
From Kent Street
Follow the historic Agar Steps (opposite the Observatory Hotel) up to the National Trust Centre.
