Binary Code: The Link 2004 Collection and courtesy of the artist, Sin-ying Ho
Contemporary artists have become a familiar presence in the southern Chinese city of Jingdezhen, once celebrated as the ‘Porcelain Capital’ of the world. Enticed by ready access to materials, equipment, and labour as well by the allure of a vaunted history, their arrival prompted ecstatic pronouncements of a ‘porcelain renaissance’. For Chinese-born artists, especially those living outside China, the ‘Porcelain Capital’ also provides an ideal setting for the rediscovery of a lost inheritance. One such ceramicist is Sin-ying Ho, a Hong-Kong born (1963), now New York-based artist. In this talk, Alex Burchmore will introduce the work of Ho and examine the larger genre of ‘New Export China’ to which she has contributed over the past two decades.
Dr Alex Burchmore is currently lecturer in Art History and Curatorial Studies at the Australian National University. His book, ‘New Export China: Translations across time and place in contemporary Chinese porcelain art (1996-2016)’ was published 2023.
