In this second instalment of Living with Textiles, Christina Sumner will offer two sessions to view selected textiles from her collection.
From early childhood, Christina has been enraptured by textiles. Learning to weave as well as learning pottery and carpentry were central to her training as an occupational therapist. These skills proved very useful when she later became a curator at the Powerhouse Museum. For nearly 30
years, she had responsibility for Australia’s most diverse textile collection. Although not a collector as such, she says things do accrue when one travels.
Christina Sumner OAM was a founding member of TAASA and is currently on the Committee of Management. Her research interests span Central, South and Southeast Asia with a primary focus on traditional textiles, about which she has written and lectured extensively. During her last six years at the Powerhouse Museum, she held the position of Principal Curator Design and Society.
