Glenn Barkley, curator of the exhibition, brick, vase, clay, cup, jug, will talk about the rationale for the exhibition. Unlike the typical approach to making an exhibition, art works were selected by typing the words of the exhibition title into the AGNSW online collection database, retrieving objects linked only by word or medium. He has taken cues from the search results, either aesthetic or conceptual, to cast a wider net through the collection, creating new connections – many of which are personal, visual, intuitive and emotional – between artworks.
Yin Cao, Curator of Chinese Art at the AGNSW and Jackie Menzies, TAASA President, will join Glenn for an informal discussion following his presentation.
Glenn Barkley is an artist, writer, curator and gardener based in Sydney and Berry, NSW. His work operates in the space between these interests, drawing upon the history of ceramics, popular song and the garden and conversations about art and the internet.
Glenn was previously a senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art (2008-14) and curator of the University of Wollongong Art Collection (1996-2007). His new book Ceramics: An Atlas of Forms, a global cultural study of the history of ceramics coincides with his curation of the exhibition brick, vase, clay, cup, jug at the Art Gallery.
