Please join us for this exciting event. Textiles have played a significant role in Japanese culture
throughout its history. Weavers and dyers are renowned for their distinctive designs and exceptional
aesthetics. Using fine examples of each, Masako will introduce various dyeing techniques such as
Katazome, Shibori, Indigo and Kakishibu as well as weaving procedures including Sakiori, Kasuri and
Meisen. Linking contemporary textiles to these traditional techniques, Masako will demonstrate how
Japanese artisanship has been expanded and refined through innovative transformation of
traditional skills. One example of this is Nuno, a textile which is recognised by museums around the
world.
MASAKO MASUDA
Masako Masuda’s lifelong engagement with Japanese textiles began with her grandfather’s textile
company trading as Chobishi in Tokyo,1910. One of the first exporters of Japanese silks and kimonos
to the world, Masuda’s personal designs also brought Western sensibilities to Japanese consumers
of the early 20th C. Masako has worked with both collectors and curators as well as textile, fashion
and costume designers in Konjaku Nishimura, Kyoto specialising in antique and vintage textiles. This
employment allowed her to extend her love of Japanese textiles into historical and technical
research. Since moving to Australia in 1995, her interests broadened to include ceramics, decorative
arts and works on paper, seeking to present the best examples of Japanese artisanship through
curated exhibitions.
