Chinese Ceramics Produced in Hong Kong

The Hybridising Traditional Heritage for Global Markets

This intriguing talk examines how artisans are regarded as active agents of the hybridisation of various traditions from South China and modern techniques of ceramic craft production in Hong Kong. Dr Wong will use the representative case study of the Majestic Ceramics Factory in Hong Kong which hybridised Blanc de Chine and Jingdezhen porcelain sculptures for global market in Asia, Europe, North America and Australia from the 1950s to the 1990s. It uncovers how the artisans produce and sell porcelain fakes for Cat Street (Hollywood Road) and movie props for Shaw Brothers for shooting. It also discusses how Hong Kong became one of the major outsourcing ceramic production centres in East Asia during the US-China trade war of the 1950s.

Dr Sharon Wong Wai -Yee is an archaeologist teaching at the department of Anthropology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She received her PhD in Southeast Asian Studies from the National University of Singapore. Her research interests include China-Southeast Asian cultural heritage studies. She is currently working on research projects on Khmer-Chinese ceramic studies in Angkor, Cambodia and ancient port city networking along the maritime ceramic roads in Asia.
