Bonhams’ Asian art specialist Yvett Klein will use examples from the Asian art sale for her talk on some of the Chinese paintings from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. In particular, she will focus on the transformations which occurred in the brush and ink painting tradition.
These transformations were already evident in the Republic period. When many artists fled to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore after the communist takeover in 1949, they became more exposed to European and American trends. Many are known to have reinvented the old medium of brush and ink, though some continued in the more traditional styles. In addition, the 1980s saw a revival of brush and ink in mainland China.
Yvett will discuss how various artists responded to these turbulent times and to the commercial pressures they experienced.
