Widely published, she is a frequent visitor to Turkey and Central Asia.
This illustrated talk highlights two historic oriental carpets that have their origins in the Islamic world but have found their way to Europe and then to Australia. Each has an established provenance and an extremely interesting life story. The first is the so- called ‘Trinitarias’ carpet, purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria in 1958 as a 17th-century Persian carpet with links to European royalty. Extensive tests have been done to confirm its age and probable origin. The second is the Yakob ‘Polonaise’ carpet in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia. Carpets of this luxurious type were exhibited in the Polish pavilion at the Paris
International Exhibition of 1878. Donated to AGSA by William Bowmore
in 2000, the AGSA ‘Polonaise’ carpet will soon undergo tests to provide
more information about its structure and origins.
