A COLLECTION OF BURMESE LACQUER AND OTHER WORKS OF ART

An invitation to TAASA members only to a private viewing

Leszek Galezia has generously offered to open his home to TAASA members to view his extensive and impressive collection of antique and contemporary Burmese lacquer betel boxes, offering vessels and storage containers; Buddhist statues, shrines and manuscripts; textiles; silver lime boxes and ceramics – amongst other objects.

Leszek’s passion for collecting began in the early 1980’s on a trip to Papua New Guinea centred around the tribal art of the Sepik River and its lake district.  Indonesian and Laotian textiles followed amongst other things. But for the past 25 years, Leszek has focused on Burma where he ‘fell in love’ with the country, people and art. One aspect of interest are some spectacular pieces of lacquerware from Myinkabar Village close to Bagan which Leszek commissioned a few years ago to support local workshops. This has provided an interesting contrast between older and newer lacquer works in his collection. The British Museum did a similar exercise from the same workshop (U Aung Myint).

Two sessions will be offered on Tuesday, 10 September at 10:30am to 12pm or 2pm to 3:30pm. Numbers in each session restricted to 15 people on a first come first serve basis. Members only.
