Having recently returned from Southern Laos, Sandy Watson will take us on a journey introducing the KaTu and their exquisite textiles and woodcarvings. The KaTu of Laos, numbering 26,500, are part of the Mon-Khmer people, some of whom inhabit about 40 villages in Laos along the Upper Xekong River and along the watershed of the Songboung River basin near the Vietnam border. This ethnic minority group displays distinct cultural traits and crafts. Sandy was fortunate in having the opportunity to visit several typical KaTu villages on the Bolaven Plateau and view a small exhibition in the Sekong Museum curated by Dr Linda MacIntosh showcasing items such as textiles, wood carvings and jewellery.
In addition we invite you to share your KaTu textiles and experiences with other TSG members.
Sandy has had an interest in “textiles” (as opposed to “fabrics”) for about 20 years when she was introduced to the TAASA Textile Study Group. An avid traveller she has taken many trips to Asian countries where she experienced production first hand, resulting in a well-loved, modest collection. She does not have definite favourites but appreciates the expertise & time involved in producing exquisite art. A self-professed Francophile she is also interested in photography and quilting. Sandy is Queensland born & bred (but has not found that too much of a disadvantage…) and has lived in the UK and the US; until recently she worked as a pharmacist but now can indulge in all her passions.

Walking Directions
From Circular Quay
Walk to George Street , The Rocks. Turn left into Argyle Street and walk under the famous Argyle Cut to climb the stairs opposite the Garrison Church. Turn left at the top of the stairs and follow Watson Road past the Sydney Observatory to the National Trust Centre.
From Kent Street
Follow the historic Agar Steps (opposite the Observatory Hotel) up to the National Trust Centre.
From Wynyard and the city
At No. 1 York Street walk through the expressway underpass. Follow the tunnel, keeping to the right, until you come up on Kent Street . Walk along Kent Street to the Agar Steps, or follow the approach to the Bridge, which will take you past the National Trust Centre on your left.
Driving directions
Drive down Kent Street , right into Argyle Street , right again into Watson Road and follow it around past the Sydney Observatory to the National Trust Centre. Free Parking is available on site.
Public Transport directions
Bus: Routes 311, 324, and 325 terminate at Argyle Street . Walk up Watson Road, Observatory Hill and follow the signs.
Train: to Wynyard or Circular Quay
Ferry: to Circular Quay and proceed as above.
