Japanese Woodblock Prints

Join Wayne Crothers, Curator of Asian Art at the NGV, for a private viewing of traditional Japanese woodblock prints in the NGV’s viewing room, followed by lunch at a Japanese restaurant, Hako. In the afternoon, visit contemporary Japanese print maker Ema Shin at her studio in Richmond to hear her talk about her work and contemporary print making. Ema has held solo exhibitions in Japan and Korea, and has been selected for numerous international group exhibitions. Emma describes her works:

“My works search for connecting threads between our inner emotions and the peaceful nurturing aspects of the natural environment in which we live. I combine invisible emotional and physical experiences with visually recognizable shapes of plant life in a mixed media approach that uses organic materials and natural processes. Using traditional Japanese water base woodblock printing, handmade Asian papers, raw fabric such as hemp and cotton combined with stitching and embroidery it is my aim to create contemporary compositions that display sensitivity for tactile materials, historical techniques, and human physical awareness.”
