The first agricultural villages of the lush and secluded Himalayan valley of Indian Kashmir hold important secrets to the spread of agriculture across the ancient world, and the opening up of cultural connections between East and West that laid the foundations for the later trade routes of the Great Silk Roads. A team from the University of Sydney has recently been opening up the secrets of the Northern Neolithic in the Valley, with important results for the early history of Asia.
Alison Betts is Professor of Silk Road Studies at the University of Sydney. She is an Adjunct Professorial Fellow at the Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Central Asian Studies, University of Kashmir. Over the past thirty-five years, she has led archaeological field expeditions across the length of the old Silk Roads from the Middle East through Central Asia to China and the western Himalayas. Her current projects include in-depth study of ancient Khorezm and research into the birth of the Silk Roads through fieldwork in Xinjiang and Kashmir.
