A general introduction to the history, art and culture of this extraordinary land, lying deep in the heart of Central Asia surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the world. Despite its geographical inaccessibility, it developed a rich and vibrant Buddhist culture and artistic tradition. This lecture gives a brief overview of Tibetan history from the time of the great Tibetan Empire (6th – 9th century) up to the present day; explores the fascinating art and culture inspired by Buddhism, introduced from India in the 7th century, and gives an insight into the current political situation.
ZARA FLEMING, an independent art consultant, lecturer and exhibition curator, with specialist knowledge of the art and culture of Tibet and the Himalayas, is a popular speaker with TAASA members. Zara studied Classical Tibetan at S.O.A.S, and initially was based at the Victoria & Albert Museum, with general responsibility for the Tibetan and Nepalese Collections (1974-81). She was then affiliated with the Central Asian Department at Bonn University cataloguing the Tibetan and Mongolian collections of all UK Museums and private collections, part of a larger cataloguing project throughout Europe (1981-88). Zara has curated several exhibitions including, “In the Steppes of Genghis Khan” at the October Gallery in London, 2003; “Asia – Body, Mind, Spirit” for the Wellcome Library and Asia House, 2004 and “The Tiger in Asian Art” at Asia House, 2010. She prepared the educational material for the “Sacred Art of Tibet – Wisdom and Compassion” exhibition at the Royal Academy in London (1992).
