Utamaro’s Picture Books
Olivia Meehan – Japanese art historian; Curator, Ian Potter Museum of Art
Utamaro Kitagawa (1753-1806) illustrated three luxury picture books on natural history themes for the renowned publisher Tsutaya JÅ«zaburÅ. These anthologies – Picture Book of Crawling Creatures, Gifts of the Ebb Tide, andMyriad Birds – are decorated by Utamaro using lavish and elaborate printmaking techniques.
Meehan will take a close look at the masterful designs of these books, recent translations of their playful poems, and the influence of European ideas and materials in Japan’s Edo Period (1615-1868).
Olivia Meehan holds a MPhil and PhD in the History of Art from the University of Cambridge, King’s College. Since graduating, she has worked in museums and galleries and as a lecturer in the History of Art.
