The subject of dyes in traditional textiles, and oriental rugs, in particular, has been one of the speaker’s consuming interests over the decades. Very little serious research has been done in recent times into dye analysis in Southeast Asian textiles although much has been achieved scientifically with Carbon 14 dating. Since Professor Mark Whiting’s pioneering work on the use of natural and synthetic dye analysis in Turkmen rugs in the mid -1970s, much has been achieved. Ross will endeavour to apply these principles to the field of dyeing in Southeast Asia and Indonesian textiles and will supplement his power point presentation with actual examples of Turkmen and other Central and Southeast Asian weavings showing the use of the dyes discussed.
Ross Langlands is a former school teacher who became interested in oriental rugs from 1970 when he worked in the wholesale trade in Zurich, Switzerland. After returning to Australia in 1975, he established Nomadic Rug Traders, a gallery dealing with oriental rugs and textiles with his wife, Irene. In the 1980s and 1990s their dealing interests spread to encompass Southeast Asian and tribal art. Ross is a past president of the Oriental Rug Society of NSW and the Antique Dealers Association of NSW and is a founding member of TAASA.
