Xu Bing (born 1955) Landscript: a stroll back to this place I enjoy. 2002. Ink on Nepalese paper. Purchased with funds from the Dr MJ Morrissey Bequest Fund in memory of Professor AL Sadler 2021, University Art Collection, UA2022.46
Fascinated by the communicative power of paper, curator of China Gallery, the Chau Chak Wing Museum, Dr Shuxia Chen will discuss how this ubiquitous material inspired her to curate this new exhibition Sentient Paper. The latest exhibition in the China Gallery celebrates the dynamic spirit of this supple yet robust material and its place in Chinese history, thought and art. It features fifty-four works ranging across diverse intellectual and creative forms from the classical to the contemporary including paintings, calligraphy, rubbings, prints, sculptures, paper-cuttings, photographs, political posters, postcards, and rare books. Sentient Paper draws upon the art collection of the Chau Chak Wing Museum, with selections from the Powerhouse and the White Rabbit Collection, and from private collections and artists. The exhibition was made possible thanks to the Pauline and Tim Harding Asian Collection Fund.
Dr Shuxia Chen is an art historian and curator of Asian art. She joined the Chau Chak Wing Museum as its inaugural curator for the China Gallery in 2019, with rich interdisciplinary knowledge and strong industry experience in the GLAM sector. She is also Lecturer of Curating and Cultural Leadership at UNSW’s Art & Design and the David Scott Mitchell Memorial Fellow of State Library of NSW (2022). Shuxia is currently collaborating with Powerhouse Museum on an exhibition and publication on Chinese toggles.
