Henka / Transformation is a solo retrospective exhibition currently on at Rochfort Gallery, North Sydney by 78 year old Japanese born artist Mitsuo Shoji. Mitsuo has worked in clay for almost 60 years. He graduated from Kyoto City University of Fine Arts and has taught generations of Australian students in Melbourne and Sydney as well as overseas in his multiple residencies. He was Lecturer in the ceramics studio of the Sydney College of the Arts for almost 30 years. Mitsuo Shoji loves to exhibit work that ‘has never been seen before’. Christine Shoji
Christine Shoji has been married to Mitsuo Shoji for over 50 years and is herself an artist after graduating in 2012 following a career in teaching. Christine has offered to guide us through this exhibition in the absence of Mitsuo Shoji who is currently artist in residence in Jingdezhen, China. She says: ‘Expect some stories, a few facts and some insights into where this amazing retrospective exhibition Henka/ Transformation originated’.
